Stock Tips

With the current madness in the economy these days, it almost makes the Church of Dim Sum look sane. All eyes are on the financial crisis currently facing the United States and international financial markets, which is widely considered to be the worst such crisis since the Great Depression. There is indeed a serious crisis in the financial sphere, as indicated by events of the last week, especially the freezing up of credit markets. The great fear on the down side is that this could lead to a widespread collapse of parts of the financial system.

Many poor people are losing their homes with the sub prime mortgages, and stocks are falling through the floor. It is hard to tell which stocks are on sale, and which stocks are failing and not likely to make it in the long run. In addition to the impact of the shrinking of construction and housing-related sectors, an even more important impact of the bursting housing bubble on the economy is through the wealth effect. U.S. households typically borrow against the equity in their homes, and the expansion of the U.S. economy from the end of the last recession (November 2001) to last year was largely driven by this borrowing.

You could keep your money in the banks, but can you really trust them. Many of the US banks are in trouble due to the sub prime scandal and other risky loans that turned into bad debts. If a bank folds and you have deposits there, do you trust the government to insure your deposits? Even if they do, it could take a while to get your money back.

Some investors have suggested storing money in pickle jars or under the mattress. This has inherent risks, such as large piles of pickles without a home, and a mattress that is extremely lumpy.

Other investors turn towards commodity stocks, and this is where we are looking at. There is a rally on Ha Gow related stocks, as consumers are buying heavily those tasty treats.

In the Church of Dim Sum, we are advising our believers to invest in Ha Gow and Siu Mai, together with Char Siu Bau. These investments will yield a net return that far outpaces the current economy. The upside of this is an increase in the demand for chilli sauce , which may yield even further returns over the long run. To invest today, you do NOT need to consult your financial advisor. The way the markets are going right now, they don't know any more than you do.
